Incorporated in 1989, the town of Leland (zip code 28451) began in the mid 1890's as a settlement at a crossroads between the Wilmington, Columbia, and Augusta railroads. When area citizens of that settlement petitioned the U.S. Post Office Department for a local Post Office, the name Leland was chosen out of three names submitted of what to call the area.
Today, Leland is one of the fastest growing towns in the region, with many new housing developments and retail centers taking shape and offering its residents the same conveniences enjoyed across the river in Wilmington.
