Does Your Small Bathroom Make you Feel Claustrophobic?

Some simple design choices could help you open it up.

Check out these tips for small bathrooms.

Not everyone can afford a master bath with twin sinks, a palatial tub, and luxury dual-headed shower. Some of us (well, most of us!) have to contend with reality. Reality means compromises, and sometimes that compromise means a small bathroom.

But just because a bathroom is small doesn't mean it has to feel small. In fact, many small bathrooms can be transformed into much larger-feeling spaces simply by making some adjustments to design choices.  Here are some design tips for your small bathroom that don't involve major renovations. If you've been living with a small bathroom, perhaps these tips will help you make the most of what you have until you decide it's time to make the upgrade:

  • Install a sink with open shelving underneath, or a narrow pedestal. A big, blocky cabinet under a sink may provide storage, but visually it consumes a hunk of open space.
  • Situate towel racks on the back of your door. Stylish towel bars stacked three high on the back of your door can eliminate the need for racks elsewhere in the bathroom, opening up more wall space. If your bathroom's really small, these towels on the back of the door might not even be out of reach from inside the shower!
  • Elevate shelving above the toilet tank. If you have shelves elsewhere, but the space above your toilet tank is empty, consider relocating high shelving to above the "dead space" behind the toilet. Consolidating this used space into a single area can broaden out the rest of the bathroom.
  • Go high with wall cubes. Cubes situated overhead can be an effective way to move the clutter of storage above eye level. There are companies who make these wall-mounted, moisture-resistant cube shelves in a variety of styles.
  • Recess some lighting. You may not multiple light sources in your small bathroom, but if you can "hide" some of your lighting in recessed areas, particularly above the shower, you can reduce the "noise" of big fixtures.

Look on the bright side: At least a small bathroom means less to clean! If these design tips aren't enough to open up your small bathroom, perhaps it's time to upgrade to that bathroom of your dreams... let The Whalen Team help you find your next home today.   Contact us today by Clicking Here!

Clean Out Your House with this De-cluttering Advice

Preparing your home to sell means presenting a home which is attractive to buyers. If you're going to be living in the home while it's on the market, and you're choosing not to stage it, you absolutely must go through a de-cluttering process. It can feel overwhelming at first, but I assure you the process can be broken down into manageable steps which will help your home sell potentially faster and for a better price.

1. Take photos of what you're up against. You might think things look pretty good until you see your home with the unflinching eye of the camera. Photograph every room from multiple angles and you'll begin to see what buyers will see. Don't forget to snap the closets, laundry rooms, and garage.

2. Plan a room-by-room attack. This doesn't have to be done in a day, a weekend, or even a week. Depending on your timeline, tackle as much or as little as you can reasonably manage before burning out. If you try to do too much at one time, you're likely to start making unfortunate compromises about what stays and what goes.

3. Use a checklist. When you assess a room, list what needs to be done and then the order in which it makes the most sense to do it. Visualizing the process will prevent you from wasting time. For example: You may find that certain pieces of furniture can go, and if you haven't planned for help moving them out, you can get stalled.

4. Be ruthless. You have clothes you haven't worn in years, piles in the garage you've moved around, and shelves of unread or dispensable books. Start thinking of those "perfectly good" somethings you've been hanging onto as anchors dragging down your home's appeal.

5. Stay motivated. Tell yourself: Less is more. Remind yourself: Every box that goes to Goodwill is a box you won't have to lift, relocate, and unpack on moving day. This is an opportunity to refresh your life!

6. Pile it up. Sort things into "give away," "throw away," and "sell." Some things can go to friends, others can go to charity. Keep in mind the real market value of items if you plan on selling them online (they're probably worth less than you think). Some you can unload curbside, other items may be destined for,, or a local junk pick-up service.

If you need someone who can see your home with a buyer's eyes, don't hesitate to invite our team over. We'd be happy to provide you with a fresh perspective on your de-cluttering mission. Get in touch with Sandy Beals today!!

Road Trip from Southport to Calabash, NC.....Part 2

Are You Ready to Continue Your Trip?

Let's Head to Oak Island

Now that we have explored Southport, it's time to take a short ride to Oak Island.Oak Island Beach

Oak Island is a favorite destination for vacationers and residents. In the Spring the streets are in bloom with our beautiful Bradford Pear trees.  On the Island,  you find more than 50 public access beaches, stores, a marina and plenty of canoe and kayak launches. Homes on the island include condos, single family homes, waterfront, water view or homes just a few blocks back from the beach.

Bradford Pear Trees NCThe live oaks will take your breath away while the inlets offer many recreational opportunities.  One of the most popular tourist spots is the Oak Island Lighthouse   which was built in 1858.  You can make a reservation to tour the grounds and climb the lighthouse, or just stop on your tour for a photo opportunity with family and friends before you continue on your journey.   If you plan to stay on the island during your visit you will find some condos and hotels, but mostly you will find rental cottages.

If you started this venture in the morning, catch breakfast at the  Old Bridge Diner.   A casual lunch can be enjoyed at The Flying Fish Cafe or Pepperoni Grill At the Beach.  You probably won't stay all day to relax and have dinner at the Turtle Island Restaurant for sea food lovers but if you do....relax and enjoy some of the best seafood in the area.

Explore Oak Island  and you will find more....this is just to get you started.

Have You Taken A Road Trip From Calabash, NC to Southport Yet?

By Sandy Beals.

Ready to Explore the Southeastern Coast of NC?

This blog will be a series  so check back for the next adventure often. Taking a road trip requires a nice sunny day in the Carolinas, and a camera. You can start in Calabash or Southport - your choice!

I think starting in Southport will give you the lay of the land and what's to come. Southport is a quaint little village that is so walkable. There are great restaurants along the waterway like Fishy Fish and the Provision Company

My favorite thing to do is relax by the water front on one of the swings and just watch the world go by. On the way to the waterfront its nice to stroll along the streets and look at the homes and B&Bs, porch railings with beach decor and the beautiful trees. Of course there is also the Silver Coast wine tasting room.

Those who love nature may want to take the self-guided "marsh walk." Beginning along Brunswick Avenue is where you will start this walk along a  long boardwalk and has incredible views of the Cape Fear River,

Explore and you will find more....this is just to get you started.

If you would like to purchase a home in this wonderful walkable town, please  start here to find your dream home and as  always you can Contact Me HERE.
